Helping with Mathematics at Home

At Lindow, we host a series of Maths workshops to help support the children with their mathematical understanding at home. These Maths workshops are designed to help parents make sense of the Maths curriculum and understand more about how the children are taught Maths in school today. They focus on how you can support your child with their mathematical development through everyday life, games and activities, as well as informing you about the teaching methods that we use in school. We want to show you what we teach and how we teach it to support mathematical learning at home.

If you couldn't make it, or if you feel like refreshing your memory, please find all presentations handouts from previous Parent Workshops below!

Fluency Grids

Fluency is at the heart of the National Curriculum for mathematics. Children need to know key mathematical facts and methods to aid their reasoning and problem-solving skills. Repetitive practice can support children with memorising these facts and becoming fluent in using them. At Lindow, we have worked with Mathematical consultants First4Maths to offer our children sets of fluency grids to support them with the practice of key mathematical facts. The facts on each grid remains the same for a whole term but the number the children are given to work with changes each week/day. Each year group is given a range to guide their choice of an appropriate number to use to lead their fluency questions. The children replace each star with the number of the week/day. Each year group have a different grid per term to work through. These run in order on each document (Autumn, Spring, Summer).

At Home Parent Workbooks

‘Enjoy maths together all year round’.  Here's another great way for your child to enjoy maths at home. Our Maths Curriculum at Lindow primarily focuses on the White Rose Maths scheme. This Maths Hub has created FREE workbooks for Years 1 - 6 to give children and parents an extra tool for enjoying maths together.

How We Teach Addition and Subtraction at Lindow Parent Workshops

During our first set of Maths workshops, we focused the number and calculation areas of maths our children will be learning at school. They focused on how you can support your child with their mathematical development through everyday life, games and activities, as well as enabling you to answer any questions your child may ask and be able to recognise any misconceptions he/she may make or have. We discussed what we teach and how we teach it in order to support mathematical learning at home and allay the very common fear of “we were taught differently so I don’t want to show them something wrong!”. If you were unable to attend our workshop in school, click on the link below for an outline of our teaching methods.

How We Teach Multiplication and Division at Lindow Parent Workshops

During the Spring term, we held a series of parent workshops that focused on the multiplication and division area of calculation policy. These workshops not only provided a practical experience of our teaching methods in Lindow but also guided our parental community through practical games and activities that can be done at home to support our children's mathematical understanding and our current homework system. If you were unable to attend our workshop in school, click on the link below for an outline of our teaching methods.
